Elena, make friends doesn’t apply to the person you’re speaking to. You use BE friends. MAKE FRIENDS refers to other people.
Grumbler’s translation is correct, but according to English logic, you first discover common interests and then become friends as a result.

Grumbler, very interesting. I immediately saw the discrepancy. You and Tatiana can be very proud of your level of mastery when you’re at the point that you’re studying the cultural-psychological aspects of language, beyond the lexical-grammatical points. It makes me feel so behind in my Russian.
